SCRIPPS NATIONAL SPELLING BEE
AT EAGLE VIEW ELEMENTARY
Each year 11 million students compete in spelling bees at the school level, learning important new words along the way. Each year, EVES participates in the Scripps National Spelling Bee as one of our premier programs. We will be holding the Spelling Bee again in January/February 2026. Our school champion will then move on to represent Eagle View in the next level of the Fairfax County regionals in March, 2026 at Lake Braddock Secondary School in Burke, VA.
CLASSROOM BEES
In January 2026, each classroom will hold a spelling bee using the competition lists provided to the homeroom teachers, which students should study prior to the spelling competition. Scripps has broken up these competition lists by structure (either spelling only or spelling and vocabulary) and grade level.
Students who win their classroom bee are eligible to participate in the School Spelling Bee, where all champions of all grades compete together, though participation is completely optional.

SCHOOL BEE
Winners of the classroom bees will receive a new list of words to study in order to compete in the school bee on February 4, 2026. If the classroom champion is unable or unwilling to participate, the runner up will be offered the opportunity to compete. All grades, first through sixth, compete together.
SCHOOL BEE RULES
The following are the most crucial rules to understand about our school spelling bee:
-
Don't be late! There is no entry after the official spelling bee start time unless previously coordinated by an adult caregiver.
-
If you start to spell a word, you may start over BUT the sequence of letters may not be changed.
-
If a speller spells a word incorrectly, the speller is immediately disqualified from the competition, except in a championship round.
-
There is a 2-minute time limit to spell a word.
-
A speller may ask questions about a word:
-
Its language of origin,
-
Its part of speech
-
An alternate pronunciation, if available,
-
Its definition,
-
Use the word in a sentence.
